Qualification Criteria

UCI Gran Fondo World Series Particpation Rights and Qualification Criteria

Riders can take part in the Gran Fondo World Series if they hold any of the following licenses:

  • No license. Some national federations require a day license which can be bought on-site. Certain countries also require a medical certificate.
  • Amateur license
  • Master license
  • Cycling for All license
  • Elite license with exception of:
      • Any rider who has during the current year been a member of a team registered with the UCI.
      • Any rider who has taken part in a World Championships, the Olympic Games, Continental Games, Regional Games, the Commonwealth Games, or a World Cup during the current year.
      • Any rider who has scored UCI points in the year of the World Championships.

After qualification, and in order to participate in the World Championships, riders must have a national Masters/Amateur/Cycling for all/Elite annual license from a UCI affiliated national federation and comply with the conditions as mentioned above for Elite riders. A day-license will no longer be accepted for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

Age groups:
The event must provide results for the following 8 different age groups, for both women and men:

  • 19 – 34y
  • 35 – 39y
  • 40 – 44y
  • 45 – 49y
  • 50 – 54y
  • 55 – 59y
  • 60 – 64y
  • +65y

Age groups are defined by the rider’s age on December 31st of the year of the respective World Championships.

A qualifier event may also organize additional age categories (70-74, 75-79, etc.). Should more than 6 riders register for any of these additional age groups, specific qualification for the World Championships will also be granted within the given age category. At the World Championships, an additional rainbow jersey and medals will only be awarded to the winners of such categories if more than 6 riders register for the given race.

Granting of participation rights for the Amateur World Championships:
Each UGFWS event will grant participation rights for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, for the Gran Fondo and/or Time Trial events. Based on the results of each race, athletes ranked within the top 25% of each age group will be awarded with a guaranteed entry to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships and be able to race for the World Champion title. The first three finishers within the 8 official age categories listed above will always qualify directly for the World Championships, independently of the number of starters in that age group. Riders must finish the race to be qualified. The 25% is calculated based on the number of starters, not on the number of preregistered riders or riders finishing the race. The winners of the qualification slots will be announced on the UGFWS website and will be invited by e-mail.

Qualification for the Gran Fondo Road Race and/or Time Trial events will be granted as follows:

  • Qualifier events hosting only a road race will grant participation rights for both the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships and UCI Gran Fondo World Championships Time Trial.
  • Qualifier events hosting a separate time trial and road race will grant the participation rights for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships Time Trial in the time trial qualifier and for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in the road race qualifier.
  • Qualifier events hosting a single time trial will only grant participation rights for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships Time Trial.
  • Qualifier events holding a stage race (time trial and 2-day road race) will grant the participation rights for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships Time Trial in the time trial qualifier and for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships during each day of the road race.

All riders (whether license holders or not) completing the same distance in a qualifier event are officially considered as participants in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, i.e. they must be part of the same ranking list, independently of the wave in which they started.

In addition, riders who participate in and finish 3 qualifier events during the season will also get a wildcard ticket to the World Championships by completing each race regardless of their finishing position. All concerned riders must contact info@ucigranfondoworldseries.com to request a wildcard.

The World Champions from Varese 2018 are automatically qualified for the 2019 World Championships. This rule is valid for both Time Trial and Road Race, and the World Champions can register for both events. Silver and bronze medal winners must qualify again through the UGFWS.

Registrations for the World Championships are only possible via the registration form on the official website of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

The UCI Gran Fondo World Series won’t do a recall anymore to replace the slots for Worlds that were not taken by the first 25%.
